Unbeweavable!!!!!!!

Caught this story yesterday on crunktastical and here. It states that:

Amy Winehouse is set to donate £50,000 to a Romanian orphanage after discovering her hair extensions could have come from there.

The 'Rehab' singer - who wears a weave to boost her trademark beehive hairstyle - was shocked to discover orphans often have all their hair cut off toprovide extensions for western women.

It's bad enough that we have conflict diamonds, now we have hair that has to be certified that it does not come from unethical sources. Shaking my head. Who is the person that came up with this idea to make money? How could someone in any culture exploit children this way and get away with it for so long? We need to reevaluate how we define beauty. Hair extensions, diamonds, breast and ass implants, colagen injections; all these things that people compliment are things are gained by exploiting others or our own bodies.

What do you think about this? Ladies, how can you be certain of where your hair came from next time you get extensions?

Weaves or hair extensions have always amazed me. I don't even try to understand where they get the hair from or how we don't ever run out of it. I know that statement sounds really dumb, but it seems to me that SOOOOOOOOOO many women want long, luscious hair that I don't understand how the handful of women who are selling or donating their hair keep up with the demand.

And how do you tell where the hair came from? I had to buy hair for my mom earlier this year, and I didn't even think about that. I certainly don't support child exploitation of any kind, so if there is a way you can tell then I would love to know.

I have A LOT more hair than my mom, so I've often thought about donating some of it one day. I think I would be absolutely horrified though, to find out it was used to make Amy Winehouse's nappy beehive :(

Part 2....

I agree with you when you say we need to redefine beauty. I don't know how, but I do know that it has to start with the young girls. Its just crazy how much pressure the media puts on us. As a 29 year old woman I know better than to let it get to me, but how do young girls hold up? I think Dove's campaign for real beauty is just a drop in the ocean. More companies need to use their advertising campaigns to promote a positive, diverse self-image.

We always talk about how the media influences women and affects our self-image, but what about the guys? Are men under pressure to be or look a certain way? Mr. Incognegro, what do you think about that?

I think depending on where we live we are under pressure. Also it depends on what circles you run with. When I was doing the Hollywood club scene, I felt like I had to wear $200 jeans, expensive shoes, etc. Now I prefer toning it down and not spending as much to impress.
Women definitely have more pressure though.
